I have really had fun in this class with prof Amy. I have learned a lot about myself as a writer not only through her class, but through my SASC program.

Learning Outcome #1

I feel as if my writing has improved since the beginning of the year. I still have a lot to work on, but I am also proud of myself to see where I am now. I had never felt the need to really revise my essays, I would make local changes, like spelling and such, but never really rearrange my essay paragraph by paragraph or sentence by sentence. In doing this, I think my writing and the process for my writing has improved, and will only continue to do so.

I think that the most time consuming but also the most important part of the essay writing process is the revisions. I have learned that revision is vital in my essay writing. I feel as if my revision process is very well shown in my second essay. As you can see, if you click on my rough draft link above, that I highlighted and made many different changes within my paragraphs. The changes are made within the commons portion of google docs. In the beginning I was having trouble with my -ing fragments, so I really wanted to focus on fixing this. So I dedicated a highlighter color to all of my ing words and went through and highlighted them. I then went back through and reread them to make sure that they weren’t fragments. When I received my grade and comments back for the essay I hadn’t done as well as I had hoped but I did notice that I had a lot less for my local revisions, including my -ing fragments.

Learning Outcome #2

For this class we have done many different writing assignments throughout the course of the year. We have done blog posts, and 3 larger essays, all of which we had to incorporate quotes into to prove and support our points. In my second essay I used many quotes from a few different sources. There is a very specific ways to imbed quotes into a paragraph, even though I could still use some work on this Learning Outcome, I think this paragraph displays the way to imbed a quote into your essay. You should have an intro to the quote, the quote, and then an explanation that kind of helps explain why you used this quote in your paper. Why it supports your views.

How can we stop something filled with so much hatred and violence without harming ourselves? In Anne Hallwards Ted Talk, Telling Our Silenced Stories, she states “someone else can benefit from my struggle(6:12)”. By standing up for what you believe in even though it doesn’t directly effect you, or you might not even see changes in your life time, you are living this out. When Rosa Parks sat down on that bus and wouldn’t move because that wasn’t fair, she wasn’t expecting to change the world. But she did, she started something amazing out of a very small action. An action which started to create change, which started a movement. There had been many people before her that had very similar stories, but it had to do with her associates and friends within the community that ignited a spark, and drew attention to the need for change.

We have come a long way as a society and as a whole, but there is still a large disturbance we would have to cause before racial equality would be achieved (pg3).

Learning Outcome #5&6

When it comes to the 5th learning outcome, documenting your work using the appropriate MLA format, I feel as if i have improved. I had never used in-text quotations until Prof. Amy’s class. I have always just included a works cited page. But after taking this composition course I have learned how to properly cite my sources in and out of text. Also, I have worked a lot on my sentence-leveled errors (grammar, punctuation, and spelling). I now carefully reread my essays and make sure someone else reads over them so that little mistakes done happen. I am extremely proud of the progress I have made in this class and am thankful for Prof. Amy and my SASC teacher.
